Lakeside Karting sits on the Arterial Road in West Thurrock, Essex, close to Lakeside Shopping Centre and around 30 minutes from central London by car. It describes itself as the largest and fastest outdoor go karting circuit in Essex, and is the current holder of the International Rental Karting Award for Best Customer Experience. The venue runs two physically separate tracks — a 900-metre international circuit for older juniors and adults, and a purpose-built 100-metre children's circuit — along with three distinct kart products spanning ages 3 upward, making it one of the more clearly age-segmented outdoor venues in the London area.

The main circuit runs 900 metres with ten corners, including two hairpins, three full-blast straights and a section known as Devil's Drop where the track falls away before the final corner. The track is 6.5 metres wide with grid capacity for 25 karts, and the average lap time is 55.5 seconds. It is floodlit for evening and all-weather racing. In the 390cc race karts, speeds of 60 to 70mph are reached — among the highest quoted for any outdoor circuit in this batch.

A separate 100-metre track was purpose-built for younger drivers not yet old enough for the main circuit. It is deliberately smooth and flowing, featuring a 25-metre straight, a hairpin and an S-bend, and is lined with non-snag barriers designed to absorb impact and deflect karts gently rather than bringing them to a sudden stop. Fully trained safety marshals are on the track at all times.

The 390cc race kart is for ages 14 and up and is used on the international circuit for the venue's fastest, most competitive racing. A 200cc kart, described by the venue as its family session kart, is available from age 8 and also runs on the international circuit. The F1 Electric kart is for ages 3 to 7 and runs exclusively on the children's circuit — this is the venue's youngest age band and is not available on the main track under any circumstance.

One-to-one tuition is available with the venue's resident instructor, a former British Kart Champion, comprising 30 minutes of theory followed by two 15-minute driving sessions. This sits alongside the standard arrive-and-drive and event formats as a dedicated coaching product for anyone wanting structured improvement rather than just seat time.

An annual membership costs £20 and removes the need to sit through the safety briefing video on every visit — the venue notes this is usually considered the biggest single benefit, alongside other perks that are subject to change. A recurring Lakeside Karting Race League also runs through the year for members wanting regular competitive racing beyond one-off visits or events.

No driving licence of any kind is required — full instruction and a mandatory safety briefing and video are provided to every driver regardless of experience. Cameras, including helmet or chest-mounted action cameras such as GoPros, are not permitted on the karts, following guidance from the National Karting Association. The venue operates a zero alcohol and drugs policy, and states plainly that it would not recommend driving for anyone who is pregnant or has a bad back or a heart condition. Riders of larger build or greater height are welcome, though the venue cannot guarantee a fit for every body shape and suggests trying a kart for size in advance if unsure.

The venue answers several specific accessibility questions directly rather than with a general statement. Colour-blind drivers are accommodated on practice sessions, with staff using written boards or hand signals instead of coloured flags once informed in advance. For drivers who are autistic, have one arm, one eye or another difference from the norm, the venue states it will conduct an individual risk assessment and allow the driver to take part — sometimes with limitations — provided no added danger is posed to the driver, other racers or staff, and asks that anyone in this position speak to a manager and be honest about their own capabilities. This is a more detailed and specific accessibility position than most karting venues in the database currently publish.

Hot and cold food and refreshments are served on site. Secure lockers, a spectator area with a balcony, changing rooms and free Wi-Fi are all available, and the venue and an after-party room can be hired separately. Ladies' shower facilities are fully operational; at the time of the venue's FAQ update, the gents' shower room was under renovation, so anyone wanting to shower afterwards should bring their own towel and shower gel and check current availability. Smoking is permitted only in the outside spectator areas and on the balcony.

Arrival time is set when booking: one hour before track time for events, 45 minutes for practice sessions. Arriving even five minutes late may affect track time, and more than 10 to 15 minutes late may lose the slot entirely, with no refund in either case. Free parking is available for all visitors. By public transport, C2C services run from Fenchurch Street or Liverpool Street. The Ibis and Premier Inn hotels are a few minutes away, and restaurants including TGI Friday's, Frankie & Benny's and Nando's sit on the neighbouring retail park, with further options at The Boardwalk in Lakeside Shopping Centre. The venue can arrange transport, on-site or podium photography, and preferential hotel rates for larger groups given reasonable notice.
